Journal prompts for after a breakup
After a breakup, it can be hard to know where to start writing. A prompt gives you one small question to answer instead of everything at once.
Pick one prompt a day. There are no right answers, and you can skip any that feel like too much.
Looking back
- What is a good memory from the relationship that you want to keep?
- What did you learn about what you need from a partner?
- What is something you did well?
Right now
- What do you miss most, and what don't you miss at all?
- What would you say to them if you knew they would just listen?
- Who has been there for you this week?
Looking ahead
- What is one thing you want to do that you put off while you were together?
- What does a good ordinary day look like for you now?
- What do you want to remember about this time, a year from now?
Something you need to say?
Some prompts are easier to answer as a message. For "what would you say to them", try Said, Not Read: write it to them as a text, and let it go through without it ever reaching them.
Make a contact, write it out, and watch it send.

Questions
How often should I journal after a breakup?
A few minutes most days is plenty. Some people write every evening for a few weeks, then less often as things settle.
What if writing makes me feel worse?
Take a break, and choose a prompt about the present or the future instead of the past. If you're having a hard time, it can help to talk it through with a friend or a counselor.
